Not all students dislike exams because they don’t enjoy the subject. Many students simply find sitting exams intimidating.

Whether your student enjoys sitting their exams or not, the reality is that their academic path and potential career options can be determined by the grades achieved. For this reason, it’s imperative for all students to prepare for and excel on each and every exam they sit.

Help Your Child Prepare for Upcoming Exams

For this reason, The Tutoring Center, Cypress Creek Plaza has prepared the following post with tips for parents to share with their children and help them prepare for and ace their next exam.

It All Starts With a Plan

Just like all tasks, the best way to manage an exam is with a plan. As soon as students find out about an upcoming exam, their first action should be to write the details in their calendar or planner. Once this is marked, students give some thought to how much and what type of studying they will need to complete to prepare adequately, such as visits to a library or a museum, group study sessions, tutoring sessions, and any resources that will be needed to study. Use this to work back from the exam date and plan out appropriate study time. This technique can not only prevent students from forgetting about upcoming exams but also ensure that when they are reminded, study time has already been planned.

Learning Tools

If you use learning tools such as scientific calculators or protractors during your regular classes then there’s a good chance that you will also require learning tools to complete the respective exam. A week prior to the exam, confirm what you are required to take to the exam and not only ensure that you have everything you need, but that it’s all in good working order. The last thing that you want is to turn up to an exam and realize that the batteries in your calculator have run out. If your student struggles to achieve high grades on their exams or report cards, tutoring near Cypress Creek Plaza can help. Identify Your Strong Points

There will always be times when students aren’t able to complete the entire exam. One of the challenges which stems from this is that it can disadvantage students who spent time studying information which isn’t covered until later in the exam, which they weren’t able to reach. Instead, before you begin the exam, look through to identify any questions or sections which you are confident can be answered both correctly and quickly. This method can help engaged students who studied be rewarded for their time spent, despite them not being able to complete the exam in its entirety. As a side note to this point - if your student regularly struggles to complete an exam then it could be an indicator that they are struggling with the subject, not just the exam process. If this is the case, speak with your student about it and ask what you can do to help.

Don’t Leave Without a Review

One of the worst things which you can do is to leave an exam without first reviewing your answers. Even if it means that you won’t have time to answer another few questions, this step is important. It takes little more than a brain which has moved on to the next question before the hand has finished writing to cause an incorrect letter or number to be written, causing the answer to be incorrect despite the student knowing the correct answer. The easiest way to prevent this from happening is to set aside some time before the exam finishes and review all of the answers you were able to provide. You don’t need to spend half of the exam time reviewing, you just need enough to fix any small obvious mistakes.
